The ‘graveyard’ page of ‘dying’ and deceased covers. Some have survived for nearly a hundred years. However their days are numbered. Modernity in road and footpath/sidewalk resurfacing is hastening the demise of many.
Many factors are involved including the following:
Settling – casing sinks into the ground; 213
Re-surfacing covered up. Bitumen, concrete or other material: 230, 852, 988, 1044, 1925, 1939
Wear – covers become worn. Identification plates have disappeared. Writing and markings are hardly discernable. Very common; 160, 566, 577, 768, 785, 817, 1028
Damage – cracks, rust affect the cast/ductile iron material; 180, 181, 984, 987, 1539, 1941
Broken – severe version of damage. Parts are missing; 161, 162, 791, 932, 968
Missing – covers are gone; 928, 1016,
Removed – little trace of what was there: 1004,
