The GFC was a State Government utility responsible for gas distribution in greater Melbourne area. (MMBW was responsible for water.)
In 1994 the state government deregulated utility companies and the government became an administrator only. Private companies became responsible for installations.
More recently low pressure gas lines are being replaced with high pressure ones. As a result gas control valves are being relocated away from building line to near the roadside curbs. The new cover is large and basic. #862 is typical of the type.
Over half the covers (8) have the same style. Typical of the featured image #784.
Historically the covers here represent the development of gas infrastructure. #607 the earliest represents Melbourne Gas Company the precursor. Then #1940 with early internal cover. Later models #571, #586, #765, #784 represent the growth period. #2361 shows the linking with Tyco a private company. There are subtle differences between each image whilst each seems identical. Note the GFC letters embedded on side of the cover between the raised lugs - #784 against the ruler.
Just to confuse sometimes the casing can mean a water valve. See MMBW for examples. This would be a plumber's installation error. Probably no water casing on hand. Thus uses what is practical.
Latter installations #932 show the loss of unique design being made of galvanised iron and concrete. Post 1994 #888 indicates plain label.
Two heavy duty designs #191 and #710 are included. The latter includes a subtle difference in #714. The former includes in small raised lettering near the hinge - 'EMCD Water'. Plus a large cross. #714 does not have any of these markings.
Large concrete cover #753 is included due to rarity.
June 2018 - 10 new covers added including Metropolitan Gas Co, Footscray Gas Co & Collingwood Gas Co.
July - #4210 - Melbourne Gas Co added.
Apr 2024 - #8041, #8045 GFC Pentair, Sureflow added.
