J & T M / John & Thomas McIlwraith
Arguably more common than Danks covers is those of J&TM. Including round, square, small and large square/ round. Also large access covers.
There has been only one example sighted of plain Mcilwraith cover.
It is the belief that they represent the business of John McIlwraith.
The insignia - John & Thomas McIlwraith.
For over 100 years the company was run from 48 Lt Collins St,
Melbourne. Like Danks they had a number of foundries in other
localities. Company was connected with McIlwraith & McEacharn, a substantial shipping company. From the 1930s McIlwraith-Davey in Queensland produced sinks and taps. Known brands include Radiant and Clark basins, Torino taps.
McIlwraiths was a substantial company and in 1950 became publicly listed. A few years later it was producing millions of pipe and plumbing fittings.
During the 1970s/80s it was taken over and delisted from the stock exchange in Melbourne.
Two covers have been added - J&TM MWW (#902) and J&TM W? Ltd (#1012). Both these covers are very early covers. The former is pre MMBW - Melbourne Water Works. For more info see MMBW page.
Not uncommon to see J&TM casings with other covers - such as #3885 with MMBW. Similar sharing with #949 rectangular cover.
#3885 - J&TM on casing with MMBW inside cover. #3904 is a quite small No 198 round cover. These used to be sighted all over Melbourne. Now very few left.
